


It’s less about challenging you to get through traditional video game obstacles than it is about letting you challenge yourself to keep coming up with new and creative ideas, new designs, and new places to put them around this dilapidated city. This was the springboard for building the first prototype of what would become our Concrete Genie PS VR Free Paint mode (an immediate favorite around the office). We can’t wait for you to try it yourself! I don’t want to give away too much, but what we came up with is pretty special. Where would we go? What kinds of things would we do together? In our first PS VR mode, VR Experience, you’ll follow a curious Genie named Splotch beneath Denska’s ominous lighthouse on a quest to unlock a mysterious power while using your Living Paint in a completely new way. We wondered, amongst the beautiful art and storytelling of Concrete Genie, what it might feel like to get to know a Genie one-on-one.

When our Art Director, Dave Smith and I first sat down with Dom to have a look at what he and Pixelopus had created, we knew immediately that this world and its magic could provide some incredible inspiration for a PS VR experience. Not sure how I feel about that preview-seems limited-but I’m buying the game anyhow, so having an additional VR mode will still be cool. It was like another set of images I could unlock on my palette. When I cleared all the lights, then another image appeared in my diary. Rather, it was putting different prefabricated colorful images onto the page, like red vines that turned into full red trees with tons of branches.Įventually, I realized that I was supposed to awaken all of the lights in the room by creating different kinds of brush strokes on the walls. It was not copying my brush strokes onto the canvas of the scene. Wherever I moved my arms physically, the paintbrush made things happen. I painted the walls, making vibrant colors appear with every stroke. Then I was able to make brush strokes with my arms. Every brush stroke carried with it sparkling lights, as if I were in control of a sparkler, rather than a paint brush. I picked up a virtual paintbrush and dipped it on an image on a diary that doubled as a kind of palette. I held the PlayStation Move controllers in my hands and then a little red creature appeared, encouraging me to make motions with my hands. “When I was creating the PGW trailer, I would start painting to capture a scene and another creature would suddenly come into shot and photobomb it! It’s fun to see these unexpected things happen and when you have a base set of systemic interactions, you get these wonderful emergent reactions.” “Sometimes you’re never sure how a creature will react,” laughs Dominic. You can call out to them as well and sometimes they’ll come over, if they feel like it!” “And when I’m painting an environment, they’ll follow and watch what you’re doing. “The creatures get sad when you leave, and are happy when you come back,” says Jeff. You can even add weather effects, like rain and thunderstorms.Īnd the creatures you create sport a variety of personalities and attributes based on how you draw them, although most will happily interact with each other and your landscapes, peeking around the trees you paint, going for a swim, picking leaves off the ground, using flowers as an umbrella… and that’s just for starters. So your painted lily pads will spread out and bloom over time, while a sun or moon will illuminate the rest of the elements in your illustration. Your artwork really is living… and reactingĪsh’s paintings don’t just look pretty – they have physics and, in the case of the creatures, artificial intelligence.
